Our Mission

Welcome

At Henderson Collegiate, it is our mission since 2010 to empower our students with the character traits, academic skills, social experiences, and love of learning necessary for them to shape their own destinies, attend and graduate from the college of their choice and become world-changing problem solvers.

Mission and Values

K-12 Learning

Academics

We believe every student has the potential to shape their own destiny. Located in the heart of rural Henderson, NC, our nationally recognized public charter school serves as a college-preparatory beacon of opportunity for K-12 students from diverse, low-income backgrounds. We prioritize 51% character and 49% academics. We offer 12 AP courses and ACT preparation to ensure students are academically equipped for success. At Henderson Collegiate, your circumstances don't determine your destiny. Instead, it's the strength of your character, the depth of your determination, and the power of your dreams that define your journey to and through college.

History of the Pride

Our Story

Eric and Carice

Henderson Collegiate's story is a love story that began when co-founders Eric and Carice Sanchez met while teaching in Vance County public schools as Teach for America corps members. They fell in love with the Henderson community, realizing the need for a K-12 charter school to address achievement gaps and to fulfill a promise that every child deserves access to a quality education. Opening in 2010, Henderson Collegiate now serves over 1,300 students, earning national recognition and top school ratings. But beyond the accolades, their passion lies in serving students, parents, teachers, and alumni, welcoming all to be part of a college-preparatory journey to and through college.

Our Story

To and Through College

Counseling

Henderson Collegiate's college counseling program aims to empower our K-12 students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue and succeed in college, regardless of their background or circumstances. Our commitment to our students extends far beyond their high school years. We recognize that the transition to college can be challenging, especially for students from low-income communities and first generation college students. That's why we've developed an alumni support program to provide ongoing guidance, resources, and encouragement to ensure our graduates thrive in college and beyond.

Strength of the Pride

Athletics

At Henderson Collegiate, we believe that athletics play a crucial role in shaping well-rounded individuals who excel not only in academics but also in sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership. Our athletics program is committed to providing students with opportunities to develop their physical skills, compete at a high level, and cultivate important character traits that will serve them well beyond the playing field. Starting in Middle School, we offer competitive sports in basketball, soccer, volleyball, golf, tennis, cross country, and cheerleading as part of the NCHSAA North Central Athletic 1A Conference.

Student Experience

Band

Students enjoy a rich and diverse experience through various programs and celebrations. Our Band program nurtures musical talent and teamwork, allowing students to develop their skills and perform in various events. Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month are celebrated with educational projects, cultural performances, and guest speakers, fostering an appreciation for diversity and the contributions of African American and Hispanic communities. Additionally, college visits are integral to our college preparatory mission, providing students with firsthand exposure to higher education environments and inspiring them to pursue their academic goals.

Teacher

"Henderson Collegiate has a unique and supportive culture that emphasizes hard work, collaboration, and growth. Unlike traditional public schools, HC sets high expectations for staff and provides continuous coaching to help teachers succeed. Feedback is constructive, frequent, and focused on improvement rather than criticism. The staff truly supports one another, celebrating wins and working together to overcome challenges. While the workload requires strong time management, the culture of positivity and accountability makes it manageable. Most importantly, the students are the heart of HC. Their resilience, curiosity, and drive to succeed make every challenge worthwhile. If you’re passionate about education, open to feedback, and ready to invest in students, HC offers an environment where you can grow and make a lasting impact."
